Culture | Ramsay Art Prize 2025
Where?
Art Gallery of South Australia
When?
31 May 2025 — 31 August 2025
The Ramsay Art Prize 2025 champions the ambition and innovation of contemporary Australian artists under 40, offering them the freedom to create bold, boundary-pushing work in any scale or medium.
Presented by the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, the Prize showcases a selection of finalist works chosen by a distinguished panel of judges, culminating in a major exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia.
This year’s judging panel includes acclaimed Australian artist Michael Zavros; Julie Fragar, Associate Professor and Visual Art Program Director at the Queensland College of Art and Design, and inaugural winner of the Ramsay People’s Choice Prize; and Emma Fey, Acting Director of AGSA.
The $100,000 Prize is awarded to a single artist, with the winning work acquired into the Gallery’s collection. A People’s Choice Prize of $15,000, supported by LK, will also be awarded based on public vote.
Local | Morrie Harrell Reserve Community Orchard
Have you been to the nearest Community Garden to Mâché?
In 2012, more than 40 local residents, Elected Members and Council staff came together to plant 71 fruit and nut trees in the Morrie Harrell playground and reserve in Unley. The trees included stone fruit, citrus, apples, pears, mulberries, walnuts, macadamias, almonds, chestnuts and guavas.
For a relatively small start-up cost, this innovative trial makes more fresh food available and can lessen the impact of the rising costs of fresh produce on the local community. This is a new way to engage with public space, creating a productive environment ideally suited to social interaction.
This trial came from community-minded individuals thinking outside the square, who believed such a project would potentially be more beneficial than simply replacing specimens that had been removed with something similar. This is not a formal, fenced and exclusive community garden; instead, the fruit and nuts produced by these trees belong to the community, and anyone accessing the reserve can share them.
Morrie Harrell Reserve is located on Ramage Street, Unley. Go check it out!
Wellbeing | South Australia's Longest Outdoor Swim Season is Now Even Longer!
The City of Unley in conjunction with the Office for Recreation, Sport, and Racing (ORSR), is excited to announce that the Unley Swimming Centre will extend its operating season to assist in the housing of displaced swimmers whilst the Adelaide Aquatic Centre (AAC) is under construction.
The Unley Swimming Centre boasts the longest swim season in the state, with a 36-week season that extends from mid-September to the end of May each year. The extended season will now see avid swimmers able to use the facility during the Winter months for the first time in the centre’s history.
With the AAC having closed its doors on 1 August 2024, the Unley Swimming Centre has officially opened its season on the same day and remains open through to the end of May 2026.
Sustainability | Preserving Natural Quiet in an Ever-Louder World
All living things thrive when there’s less human-made noise. That’s why Quiet Parks International (QPI) is making a strong case for quiet.
In 2020, as the world slowed during the pandemic and the usual hum of planes and traffic faded, a new soundscape emerged: birdsong, rainfall, and the gentle buzz of bees moving between flowers. This rare moment revealed what natural silence truly sounds like.
“It was a turning point for our cause,” says Matt Mikkelsen, executive director of wilderness parks at QPI, a nonprofit founded in 2018. “Although eerie, it showed us all what we’d been missing.”
QPI’s mission is to protect and preserve the world’s remaining quiet places. Parks, trails, and wilderness areas where people can escape noise pollution and reconnect with the healing power of natural sound. The organisation’s mission to save quiet for the benefit of all life is part of a broader effort to combat the increasing noise of our world.
