Member Feature | Mike Han
Meet Mike, one of our Flexi Desk members and a Software Engineer at Atlassian, where he specialises in performance within the Jira Cloud team. His role focuses on identifying low-level optimisations and potential architectural improvements to keep Jira Cloud running smoothly for Atlassian's largest clients.
But when he’s not deep in performance improvements, you’ll probably find him outdoors. Hiking, horse riding, snowboarding, and fishing are just a few of his go-to activities (he was even on the state show jumping team as a kid!) Lately, he’s been getting into ski touring and just escaped the sweltering Adelaide summer with a snowy adventure in Japan.
Beyond the outdoors, Mike is also an avid reader, an amateur cook, and a dedicated record collector. He just powered through Les Misérables and is currently making his way through The Odyssey, because why not tackle the classics?
What’s the best thing about Mâché so far?
"I love the convenient location and how friendly its members are. Atlassian is fully remote so without Mâché there's a risk I would become a recluse!
The facilities are great too - and having KOM coffee next door is a great boost."
Any must-read books or must-watch movies?
"I'm not a huge movie guy but I recently watched Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on the plane to Japan and enjoyed it. I also loved Parasite when it came out.
In terms of books I'm a big Tolkien fan and have read everything, Silmarillion included.
I like sci-fi too and I loved (in no particular order): Hyperion, Neverness, Orphans of Earth, Saturn Returns, and Dune. Oscar and the Egg is a good read. Les Mis is fun too albeit extremely dense."
Favourite holiday spot?
"Probably Japan, I've been a few times. I love snowboarding, ramen and hot pools so you can't go anywhere better really. I also love the Eyre peninsula - I grew up in Port Augusta so we go to the EP quite often."
Go-to comfort food?
"Ramen, hands down. I started a ramen appreciation club in uni."
One thing you absolutely can’t live without?
"Tie between my dog and my partner Steph."
Top pick: band, DJ, or solo artist?
"Anything as long as it's not country. I worked as a jackaroo for a year and couldn't stand it."
Perfect day out in Adelaide?
"Good question! Probably involves some good coffee, a short walk then a long lunch at a winery somewhere... maybe followed up by an arvo on the beach with a beer if it's summer."

Culture | Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard
One of Europe’s most important archaeological finds of the century will be showcased in a landmark exhibition at the South Australian Museum in early February 2025.
In an international coup, Adelaide is the first stop on a world tour of this exhibition, and it will be the very first time this collection of objects has ever travelled outside the United Kingdom.
The Galloway Hoard is the richest find of rare and unique Viking-age objects ever made in Britain or Ireland. Buried around AD 900 and only discovered in 2014 in southwest Scotland, the Hoard contains a stunning variety of objects and materials buried together.
Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard will be on show at the South Australian Museum from 8 February to 27 July 2025.
Local | 10 common trees you'll see around Adelaide
Adelaide boasts around 3,000 tree species, both native and exotic. Ten of the most common include:
🌳Several varieties of Eucalyptus (gum trees), known for their fast growth and iconic scent;
🌳Bottlebrush trees, recognised by their distinctive, colourful flowers;
🌳Ornamental pear trees, prized for their vibrant autumn foliage and spring blossoms;
🌳Raywood ash trees offer light summer shade and burgundy autumn leaves;
🌳Golden elm trees, some over a century old;
🌳Jacaranda trees, famous for their spectacular purple spring blooms;
🌳White cedars, drought-tolerant and winter deciduous;
🌳Crepe myrtle trees, provide year-round colour with changing leaves, bark, and flowers;
🌳Grevillea trees (silky oaks), fast-growing with brush-like flowers; and
🌳London plane trees, known for their small, fuzzy seed pods. Yes, just like the ones in front of our building on Pulteney St!"
While Adelaide enjoys nearly 17% tree canopy cover, it's unevenly distributed. The Urban Greening Strategy aims to address this by protecting and enhancing the city's greenery through legislation, policy, and community engagement.

Wellbeing | Love Your People, Love the Planet
February is the month of love and while chocolates, flowers, and teddy bears flood the shelves, let’s be real, most of it ends up as waste.
Why not switch it up this time and show some love to both your special person and the planet? With Aussies spending over $500 million on Valentine's gifts (yep, you read that right), it’s the perfect time to rethink how we celebrate.
Here are some fun, thoughtful, and sustainable ways to make February just as special (if not more!):

🚲 Take on a fun eco-challenge
♻️ Gift practical, low-waste goodies
🍷 Choose local, sustainable wine
🎭 Plan a zero-waste date
