Culture | Velvet Underground

Finally some great news for the live music scene, a new venue has opened this month in Adelaide. Velvet Underground is located at 107 King William Street, the venue promises to be a haven for local talent, showcasing everything from burlesque and cabaret to rock bands and jazz shows.

The brainchild of Annie Medlen, the venue aims to provide a space not just for music, but for the entire Adelaide entertainment scene. Medlen hopes to fill the void left by recent live music venue closures and become a hub for the city's creative community. Boasting a large space with a versatile layout, the space can be adapted to different types of performances. Expect velvet-coated walls, disco balls, and purple neon lights, along with a separate area with a pool table, jukebox, and dart board.

Velvet Underground also looks to support the local hospitality scene by featuring drinks from Adelaide distillers and wine labels. We can't wait to have a taste and a listen to their lineup!

Keeping indoor plants happy in the Autumn

As Adelaide's weather changes with cooler mornings and less sunlight, it's time to adjust your indoor plant care routine. Here are some key tips from InDaily's Kimberly Murray

Fertilise wisely: Reduce fertilizing as plants slow down for the season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser with less nitrogen.

Prune and groom: Trim away dead leaves and stems to encourage new growth and improve air circulation.

Watch out for pests: Inspect your plants for unwanted guests like spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs. Use natural remedies like insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.

Boost humidity: Drier air from heating systems can harm plants. Increase humidity with water trays or misting.

Water less: Cooler weather means less growth, so water only when the top inch of soil feels dry. Don't forget about proper drainage to avoid root rot.

Lighten up: Move plants closer to windows for more natural light, or use artificial lights if needed. Watch for signs your plants are stretching towards the light.

Mind the temperature: Keep plants away from drafts, radiators, and air conditioners to maintain a stable environment.

By following these tips, you can create a thriving indoor jungle throughout the cooler months. Happy planting!
